Description

Modern Lexicography in Anundoram Borooah’s English Sanskrit Dictionary It gives me pleasure to learn that the Ph.D. Thesis entitled ‘The Lexicographical Works of Anundoram Borooah with Special Reference to his English-Sanskrit Dictionary’ by Dr. Mandakini Mahanta is being published under the title ‘Modern Lexicography in Anundoram Borooah’s English-Sanskrit Dictionary.

This work containing five chapters deals with different aspects of Sanskrit Lexicography after Anundoram Borooah, the great Assamese Sanskrit scholar of international repute. The author of the present work Dr. Mandakini Mahanta has dealt with the Lexicographical works of Anundoram Borooah with critical and comparative study. In lucid and correct English, Dr. Mahanta tries to do justice to the works and in doing so, she has been successful and this will, I believe and affirm that the lovers of Sanskrit Lexicography will be benefitted by this work of Mahanta. I appreciate her for working on such an important topic.

I was then a Degree student studying in Cotton College, Guwahati-l that I made a promise to my father late Professor Rajendra Chandra Mahanta under whose great shelter I stepped into the learning of Sanskrit. It was the promise to prosecute my doctoral study on Anundoram Borooah. This is the name of that great, if not the greatest, Assamese who became one of the most renowned Indologists of the world. He was the first Assamese graduate, the first Assamese Barrister-at-law and the first Assamese to become a member of the Indian Civil Service. His contribution towards Sanskrit study is immense. He worked out as many as 13 books that carry Borooah’s stupendous genius. After my post-graduation in the department of Sanskrit, Gauhati University in 2009 taking literature group as specialization I got admitted into Ph.D. course in the year 2010. Corresponding to my earlier decision my topic was kept on Anundoram Borooah.

As Borooah himself was interested in the branch of the lexicography my subject of research was specified into the study of the lexicographical works of Borooah with special reference to his English-Sanskrit Dictionary. This present book is based on my research work entitled The Lexicographical Works of Anundoram Borooah with Special Reference to His English -Sanskrit Dictionary. The lexicographical works of Anundoram Borooah are the Nanarthasamgraha, edition of Amarasimha’s Namalinganusasana, the Dhatukośa, and the English-Sanskrit Dictionary. All these works bear the stamp of Borooah’s original thinking, his great labour and the indigenous classical attire.
