This section is devoted to the diseases belonging to the disciplines of Kayachikitsa, Prasoothi, Shalya and Shalakya. The diseases described in first eight chapters are known as Ashta Mahagada by Maharshi Sushruta due to their nature of dreadfulness and difficulty to treat.
