The New Vedic Selection Part 2 The New Vedic Selection, consisting of representa tive pieces from the Samhitas, Brāhmaņas, Aranyakas, Upanisads and some of the important Vedāngas, was prepared by me in 1965, in collaboration with my revered teacher Pt. N. K. S. Telanga on the kind advice of Dr. S. Bhattacharya, Professor and Head of the Deptt. of Sanskrit and Pali, B. H. U. The book was subsequently, I am glad to state, prescribed for B. A. and M. A. courses by the Universities.
In June, 1971, The New Vedic Selection became out of print. Unfortunately, the plan to bring out a second edition was to be dropped, because of the sad premature demise of Pt. N. K. S. Talanga in August, 1971. However, due to the pressing demand for the book from students and teachers I took up the plan to bring out a revised edition.
Since The New Vedic Selection contained Vedic texts prescribed for B. A, as well as for M. A. classes, it was felt that for the convenience of students the book. be published in two parts, separating the relevant cour- ses. Consequently, the first part, consisting of the hymns prescribed for the B. A. courses of the Banaras Hindu University as also of various other Universities, was brought out in September, 1972. Now I feel pleasure in presenting the Second Part before the M. A. Students, for which they were waiting from a long time.
About the present Second Part it may be noted:-
(i) The plan of the previous edition has been followed intact.
(ii) It is a revised and improved edition.
(iii) In the previous edition 30 hymns from the Rgveda were selected for study, but in this edition 18 hymns of that edition (remaining 12 hymns being included in the first part) and 9 new hymns, with a total number of 27 hymns from the Rgveda have been selected for study.
(iv) No change has been made in the selection of passages from the other Samhitās, Brāhmaņās, Upanisads and Vedānga literature.
(v) Vaidika-Svara-Bodha by the present author, has very frequently been referred to in connec- tion with the discussions regarding the accentual peculiarities of the words.
(vi) Appendices on Vedic Grammar and Vedio Accent have been thoroughly revised. The principle of marking accent-marks in the Satapatha Brahma- ņa, as given in the previous edition, has been contradicted, because the opinion of the present author has now been changed.
