Description

श्रीदुर्गासप्तशती (Shri Durga Saptsati) In India, the land of spiritualistic thinking, the think tanks have been endeavouring, from time immemorial, to find out the facts regarding the base, the locus as well as the regulating factor of the cycle of creation. Such efforts of the spiritual thinkers are as old as Hinduism, the oldest of the living religions of the world. The evolution of the universe is supposed to be an effect; so it must have certain antecedents, which may be the causes. Hindus believe in the deities, who are supposed to be the causes of the cycle of the universe. There must have certain force or energy a notion held by the western thinkers like Spencer also, that all things proceed from an Infinite and Eternal Energy. But one, who possesses nó knowledge of the nature of that Energy or Power, is not competent to realise the truth; and the Reality behind this mystique of the universe is not revealed to such a person. Hindus believe in the existence of certain deities as the regulators or controllers of different rotational events of the creation. Quite evidently, so many deities have been occupying exorbitant importance in the Hindu mind. It is to be mentioned that in Hinduism is noticed the doctrine of Istadevatā (chosen deity). It denotes that out of the numerous forms of the God, Who is single in reality, a man should choose that form which satisfies his spiritual desire or longing and he should make it the only object of his love and devotion. However, that deity is a means in the process of realisation of the ultimate goal of human pursuit i.e. Moksa. Of cource, to the wise seers of the Vedas, there came to be revealed the fact Indra, Mitra, Varuņa, Agni and others are, in reality, the various forms of one single deity. People eulogise the single god in so many ways, under various circumstances.
